Over the past few days, I have received many enquiries about Google Classroom parent summaries (notifications).
When parents/carers were invited to the first Google classroom they received an email to set up how often they want to receive classroom notifications, if they ignored this email or set notifications to never they will not receive any further notifications. Notifications work across all classrooms for the individual student, if you add a parent/carer to a classroom page it adds them to all classrooms and the same works in reverse, if you remove a parent from your classroom page it removes them from all Google Classroom pages.
If parents are not receiving notification they need to go back to the original email and change their notification settings, more than likely they will not be able to find the email as a year 10 parent for example would have received their first Classroom invitation back in 2018.
Last year during lockdown the process of checking and adding parents to classroom notifications was managed by pastoral teachers. Each pastoral class has a Google classroom page and parents/carers were invited by the pastoral teacher. ONLY one teacher needs to invite a parent/carer once the parent accepts the invitation they will automatically add to all Google Classrooms pages that the student is enrolled in.
How to fix errors: Can every teacher please check that you have the "Guardian Notifications" turned ON, if one teacher has notifications "off" it affects every classroom page for that student.
1. Go Google Classroom settings: Cogwheel
2. Make sure that "Guardian Summary is on"
3. Resend Invitation: To avoid double handling can I ask that pastoral teachers check with their homeroom to see if their parents are receiving notifications if they are not can you receiving notifications can you resend the invitation. Some parents may have changed the email address since the first invitation so you may need to check if the email address is correct.
The video below explains how Google Classroom Guardian summaries work, the only thing that parents can access or receive is a summary of the work that has been added to the student Google Classroom page, parents DO NOT get access to the student's classroom page.
